HSSD Class Descriptions
Preschool Combination Classes
Preschool classes developmentally appropriate for ages 3-5 years include an introduction to tap, ballet, and creative movement. These classes are labeled as Pre 1 and Pre 2.
Beginning & Intermediate Elementary Combination Classes
The foundations of tap, ballet, and jazz for students 6-8 years old with limited dance experience. These classes are labeled as BTBJ and ITBJ.
Pre-Jazz
A full hour of jazz technique and choreography for ages 6-9 years with minimal dance experience. To be taken in conjunction with a TBJ or a full hour ballet class.
Level 1 TBJ
Students ranging in age from 7-10 years with prior dance experience. Students are divided into classes by age and skill level.
Hip-hop
A full hour of technique and choreography for ages 8 and up with minimal dance experience. These classes are labeled by age/level.
Pre Ballet
Classical technique for ages 8 and up with at least 2 years prior dance experience.
Ballet I, II and III
Classical technique for ages 9 and up with at least 2 years prior dance experience.
Contemporary
Includes advanced modern and ballet technique for students 13 and up with several consecutive years of ballet and lyrical experience.
Alixa Flexibility, Pilates, and Progressing Ballet Technique
These classes are recommended for advanced dancers 13 and up pursuing proper alignment technique to insure a safe foundation and achieve a higher skill set. These classes are charged a la carte at $40 per month. HSSD teachers have spent several years in continuing education training and acquired numerous certifications in Sugarfoot Therapy, Alixa, PBT, Fletcher Pilates, and Yoga.
Level 3 Tap
A full hour classical tap class for students 10 and up with tap experience and a teacher recommendation. Additional jazz and ballet classes are encouraged. Tuition discount is offered for multiple classes.
Pre Lyrical and Lyrical
Includes advanced ballet technique, modern & lyrical styles for students 10 and older. By teacher recommendation only. Must be taking ballet.
Level 4 Tap
A full hour of classical and rhythm tap technique for ages 11 and up by teacher recommendation only. Additional jazz and ballet classes are encouraged. Tuition discount is offered for multiple classes.
Intermediate Ballet
An hour and a half of classical technique for students 12 and up with at least 3 years prior dance experience.
ACRO I and II
Following the Acrobatic Arts curriculum guide students 12 and older will learn acro for dance technique. This class is charged a la carte at $40 per month.
Precision Dance & Drill Team Prep Classes
Preparatory instruction for middle and high school students trying out for dance and drill teams.
Leaps and Turns
A full hour of precision dance technique for students 13 and up focused on the execution of proper alignment for leaps and turns.
Jazz Progressions & Choreography
A full hour of jazz technique and choreography. Teacher recommendation required. These classes are labeled by level Jazz I, Jazz II, Jazz III, Intermediate Jazz, Advanced Jazz.
Pre-Pointe & Pointe
An hour and a half of classical technique for students with a teacher recommendation. Students will receive written permission to purchase pointe shoes.
All students are placed in class by age and ability level. Some classes may have an age span of two school years. HSSD teachers will determine dance level and recommend class placement. The first few weeks of our dance year are dedicated to review and evaluations. Students may be asked to try an additional or optional class during the fall semester. If a student at anytime is a distraction to overall instruction they will be asked to sit with a family member in the lobby or in the office with HSSD staff.
